    aoa :)
im so glad you’ve finally started a blog..
doraha reminds me of the classic ptv plays which had a strong content and no back ground score..
from the screenplay to direction to the cast..its a tv’s masterpiece..after ages iv actually stuck to a drama ..
‘jitni tareef ho kam hai ‘ :)
and this is no buttering..its coming straight from the heart!

Great to see I’m the first person to post on this blog! :D

Well, Doraha, it’s doin great…It’s like the revival of the golden PTV era. It is very real, I mean I belong to a village in Charsadda (it’s a place near Peshawar, famous for its bomb blasts :P) and I have been seein all your characters in my village, lolz! In my writings or productions you hardly see the pakistani society, makes them less commercially viable, cos I think we are living in a very cheesy kind of a society but ur play changed my opinion and I think if done this way, portrayal of our (that part of) society can be pretty glamorous and not cheesy, u know cheesy doesnt look cheesy when u deliberately show it knowing its all pretty corny, unlike most of our directors who show cheesy stuff cos they themselves have the same mentality! In this other play by Umera Ahmed, who just became my favorite pakistani writer after my wife and myself lolz, “The Ghost” Asif Raza Mir delivers a pretty corny dialogue, but Nadia Jameel laughs at his corniness, that was really impressive, and very intelligent u know! U show corniness and u intelligently cover it up…

btw I put “that part of” in brackets cos u know our society changes from door to door!

now just like Atif Aslam in his second song as a solo artist sang a line from AADAT only to re-introduce himself to the audience he is the guy who sang AADAT originally :P I will write “Kuch tou hua hai” to make u recognise me properly :P…NO NO, I will add some tags to my personality - sultana siddiqui, hum tv, sitcom, kuch tou hua hai, mikaal zulfiqaar, juggun kazim…I mean u have to excuse me, I am not a very famous director… :P

I thought I was the first to post a comment on ur blog, but now i know its because all the other comments must be awaiting moderation :(

Sanam Baloch is superb. Everything else has already been said :)

  5. on 07 Dec 2008 at 7:12 am Usman Ghani

A wonderful effort by an upcoming director,
Very different from the usual stuff on our TV channels.

  6. on 08 Dec 2008 at 7:53 am Basmah Riaz

really nice play..very well-paced, well-directed. this is such an old typical issue in our society, forced marriages within the family. glad to know someone is tackling this subject. umera ahmed writes to the point, no lengthy dialogues.

one thing though, why would a woman like sara wait for two years to get a job?

  7. on 08 Dec 2008 at 8:09 am Mehreen

Thanks all for your comments. Regarding Basmah’s question as to why Sara waited so long to get a job. Couple of reasons:I think she didnt want to rock the boat more than necessary and try to adjust to life in a new house first.
She did tell Omar (Humayun Saeed) in Ep 4 or 5 that she wanted to apply for jobs and at that time Omar reacted with silence which she did confront him with but which also probably postponed her search for a job.

If I was Sara, I would have taken a job a week after marriage to get out of that house :) but i think Sara was initially trying to play it safe, especially since the marriage took place against the wishes of both families.

I loved the art of Film and Drama making but for long I was searching for an inspiration.
Doraha seems to be one, I simply fell in love with its simplicity and elaborative work done on the characters. U know this play seems like somebuddy has really done some work… and made a drama rather than a money making machine…
    i really liked,.. it
but why Humayun Saeed is shown as such an overwieght.. that is the one flaw..rest needless to say that was awsome.. take care mahreen and keep us enthralled in future

  9. on 08 Dec 2008 at 12:34 pm admin

Thank you Jehanzeb. I think all the actors performed very very well. Also had the back up of a great team, from the writer, Umera Ahmed, to my cameraman, Naeem Mustafa, the assistants, make up people, producer, etc, etc..

  10. on 08 Dec 2008 at 7:53 pm Raheel

Usman, MJ happens to be a veteran not an upcoming director :p Sorry but I had to mention this.

  11. on 14 Dec 2008 at 10:16 am Umer Ilyas

so beautifully written…….so naturally directed and produced…..
seems our typical Pakistani home and acts….. :)

    keep up the good work……

  12. on 16 Dec 2008 at 4:29 am Benish

    Wat a fabulous entertainment !!
Outta umera’s plays, after Lahasil its something that touches the heart…. !

Best part abt it is its true dramatization- the crumpled dresses of poor mother (badr khalil) the oil stains on the wall adjacent to the stove , the green-painted doors, true and realistic dialogues, uffffff they r just wow , spontaneous responses and above all Sonia Rehman her expressions and looks ,hmmm Sarah is such a wonderful character and u know wat ??? Shehla seems to b justified as well, shes doing gr8, i mean i m confused whether the characters r outta world or the actors makin them so…..But whatever , on the whole its just fantastic !!!! :)

And this is for the first time that we’re discuussssin any pakistani drama among friends in uni…… worth praising !!!

  13. on 16 Dec 2008 at 10:39 am Saadia

I am VERY EXCITED to see you online!! Although we are not getting Doraha in the US, I can at least catch it online which is fantastic since our plays these days have turned into a mish mash of soaps and bad writing and no sense of direction. For viewers like us a Mehreen Jabbar+Umera Ahmad combo is a dream come true! :) So far I have seen 4-5 episodes and enjoyed all of them.
Keep on doing the great work Mehreen! You are a fantastic director because you know how to portray human emotions without going over the top. Thanks for keeping it REAL and staying Rock Solid by not succumbing to the industry’s pressures. Thanks for no fake eye lashes, eye liner dripping tears, and tanktops! It’s such a beautiful relief!

Where is Nadia Jameel hiding these days?
Hopefully we’ll be able to catch Malal soon too.

  14. on 17 Dec 2008 at 10:18 am Ashie

I have been telling everyone to watch it. The casting is perfect and everyone is so fabulous in it. It makes me feel like writing to Badar Khalil to tell her how much bowled over I am by her performance. I couldn’t imagine anyone else doing it.

I have completely disconnected from watching illogical indian dramas now. Doraha has spoilt me, if it can’t be even 50% quality of this then I am not wasting my time watching it, I’d rather root out other Mehreen Jabbar work.

  15. on 19 Dec 2008 at 4:24 pm admin

Thank you all for your comments on Doraha. I hope it sustains your interest till the end! As much as I complain about doing serials, they really do make an impact because they are repeated every week and not lost in the jungle of cable channels.
I do hope though that channels and advertisers take more initiatives in producing telefilms and documentaries as well as short films.

  16. on 20 Dec 2008 at 5:05 pm Asma Khan

DORAHA is a MASTERPIECE.Congrats to the whole team. U guys won’t believe this, as I am a U.S graduate, currently studying Addictions in Canada, married, with a 5 year old kid, but hooked to Urdu novels and Khawateen digest till today. And this story by Umera Ahmed originally published as “Main nay khawaboon ka shajar dekha hai” is one of my 2 favourites. I have read it almost 20 times and always wished that someone would make a movie or play on this. Thank u so much, Mehreen , Abdullah Kadwani and Humayun Saeed. Great job, guys! kEEP IT UP!

  17. on 21 Dec 2008 at 3:47 pm pakeezah

Generally I am not very active in putting up comments, but this play has literally forced me to do so.Its sucha a relief to actually get to see the real face of our society. We were all so fed up of the same old crap,it was all so fake…but thank God we can actually relate to all the characters in this play-they are all so beautifully portrayed. Every scene, every part of the play shows how much effort has been put to it! mehreen uve done a meticulous job, really!!
and as for the cast…I’ve always admired Sonia as an actress besides nadia Jameel & Saniya saeed… she has the potential and she acts so naturally…she doesnt even need all that glamourous look, shes perfect the way she is…keep up the good work!!
And hamayun and that new gal(sanam baloch) have done full justice to their roles. Badar Khaleel has done a marvellous job as expected.
Anyway i just lubb everything abt this play…Mehreen we want to see more of such plays.

P.S Are your previous plays available on dvds?

    -Peace-

  18. on 21 Dec 2008 at 9:35 pm sonia

  19. on 22 Dec 2008 at 9:28 pm Sheikh Muhammad Shahid

    Wow!
it seems as if the golden age of pakistani dramas is coming back…but of all the dramas currently on air, Doraha is the best. the story, the cast, the directions, the theme song (anyone plz tell me where i can download this song…) all are spot on…. great work!

  20. on 23 Dec 2008 at 7:45 pm Olde_Tyme_Karachiite

Mehreen, I cannot begin to tell you how much I am enjoying this drama. This is truly a masterpiece. I’ve been glued to the pc for the past 2 nights, watching the serials. Am on episode 4, will put the kids to bed, make a cup of tea, and watch some more. My wife says she has never in the 12 years we’ve been married, ever seen me watching a drama, urdu or english, riveted in this manner. My heartfelt congratulations to everyone involved in this production. Sincerely, Shahrukh

MEHREEN HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO U WITH LOVE

  24. on 29 Dec 2008 at 2:02 am shazi

I am one of those minority, or extinct Pakistanis, that still love PTV and do not watch Indian dramas and films at all. I am waiting for our drama and film industry to improve, till then I’ll wait.
Directors like Mehreen make us proud. This drama is very good, the story, direction and acting is excellent, especially Badar Khalil and actor playing Sarah’s character. I’m glad that it’s not tacky and soapy.
As Anwar Maqsood once said, “Jab insaan roz bahar ka khana khai tau aakhir ukta jata hai aur phir ghar ka khana achha lagta hai.” I hope, our people are coming back for “ghar ka khana, for good.”

this particular serial has been praised in every manner possible…even i love it..i reside in the US, watched the first episode and had to watch the rest of them within hours…
but its soo depressing i mean the lady did every possible thing she could to make her in laws like her but all in vain!!
it would be great if Shehla would confess..i’d love it!
    “great job” to the director!!

  29. on 30 Dec 2008 at 2:34 pm Ambreen Siddiqi

and i love the title track:)

MEHREEN I M DYING TO GET UR REPLY

  31. on 01 Jan 2009 at 1:31 am Q. Iqbal

Saw the first episode of Doraha, and this was the first time I ever saw any work of Mehreen Jabbar. I think the direction is better than most of the TV dramas I had had a chance to see on Geo and ARY network. Acting is reasonable, and the drama does seem to hold one’s interest.

However, the drama repeats the same old story of a love-triangle. I have seen only one episode, so I hope that next episodes will have more developed storyline. Character sketches are stereotypical, and some characters seem older than the roles given to them, and some of the others seem unrealistically novice. I think it is the good shooting style and direction that salvages the drama.

In general, the drama is fine because of its direction and acting, and hopefully might turn out to be one of the better TV dramas being shown currently.

    Hey,
Just wanted to tell you that this program is unbelievably good. I love watching it from the beginning till the end. The actors are great too. Pakistan’s got TALENT. I adore Sonia Rehman’s acting. She is so incredibly natural at this. She was born to be an actress. Overall, great program, the credit goes to all!! keep them coming. :)

  33. on 01 Jan 2009 at 9:10 pm Amara Khan

i first heard of this drama on nadia khan show when sanam baloch was invited as a guest. when i find out that this drama is written by my most favorite auther and directed by you, i knew that i will fall in love with it.
it just started here in USA this week, and after watching the first episode on tv, i couldn’t wait and went online to watch the available episodes.
i can’t explain you how the story and the characters have captured my thoughts. i couldn’t stop thinking about it.
the story and the acting is so close to the reality that i stopped watch it after 5 episodes because i found out sarah is going to get divorced from omar, and even though i know it’s not a real life, but still the thought of their divorce upset me so much that i couldn’t bring my self up to continuing the drama. (yes i am a emotional freak :p)
One more thing i wanted to tell you is that umera ahmed is the most amazing writer of our generation. her stories are amazing and her characters are powerful. i have seen many dramas that are created on her stories and even though most of those dramas were really good, but they still didn’t come as close to the way we imagined them while reading the story. but you have made all the characters of her story act so well that there is not gap left between the acting and our imagination.

    Thank you,
    Amara Khan

ver fantastic beautiful play i have no words …….many many happy returns of the day mahreen

  35. on 02 Jan 2009 at 4:03 am Eram Zehra

Hi Mehreen, I absolutely love the play doraha, and grateful that a good play came along. I love watching dramas, as i grew up watching them, and now i think i long for a good play on TV.

I love the way you make dramas. I mean the characters always have the right preference and emphasis on screen, and there is never unnecessary & stupid background music trying to portray the emotions of the characters.

I love the work that everyone has done in the play, and it just focuses on such a common issue in our society.

Thanx for a great play. Also I couldn’t watch ramchand pakistani but want to. When will it be available in the market?

  36. on 03 Jan 2009 at 5:59 am Eram Zehra

Makes me very very proud as a Pakistani when I see your work.

  37. on 03 Jan 2009 at 2:46 pm Ambreen Siddiqi

i watched the eleventh episode of Doraha today…Sarah got married to that freak!!! please guys dont do this…she has to apply for divorce immediately…why is she not telling her parents, be reasonable she is an educated woman. why does she have to be so fervid about keeping her marriage going??
someone respond to this question asap!

  40. on 04 Jan 2009 at 2:03 am Nabil Saleh

Doraha as many have already said that it reminds of the classic PTV plays …what differentiates it is a new storyline and some able direction. Moreover all the actors are doing a good job particularly Sonia Rehman.
It is definitely something to look for on TV these days ..i hope others take a leaf out of this and stop making bad copies of already awful Indian soaps.

    Goodwork and goodluck

  41. on 05 Jan 2009 at 3:03 am Huma

The drama is wonderful.Kindly upload the tittle song.I love it.You’ve done an excellent job.

  42. on 05 Jan 2009 at 8:29 am Ambreen Siddiqi

    @ Farina:
i know yaar that that its merely a drama but it has almost seeped into me..i feel like i know this lady(Sarah) and the direction and screenplay is so powerful that even as mi thoughts wander the whole week after watching it..it pretty much comes baq to “what now?”
emotinally freaky i am but yeah!!

  43. on 05 Jan 2009 at 12:07 pm Farina

    @ambreen
na na worry not u are not at all an emotional freak…its quite natural and thankGod v got some emotional ppl left in this world .. those who really do feel.. n i guess thats wat really is a strength of this play…it makes u feel that characters like omer and sara r very much alive… they are among us.. v know their pain.. their agony and v r feeling it along with them.
rather ambreen i am sorry, i should have realized that ur emotions mean a lot. accept my apology and continue enjoyin the play :D
between, i also end up waiting whole week for this play :)

  50. on 10 Jan 2009 at 12:03 pm Saad Bin Ahmed

Drama serial Doraha is purely Pakistani stuff which we missed alot since long. Now we have to accelerate and revive our natural in born talent of Our tremendous Drama making capability with its full passion coz now we have many channels to promote our tradition and culture in a positive way. Only need is to depend upon our people and infrastucture coz we de-tracked after indian dramas on their glamorous channels due to artificiality. Now we have come on line with our superb Capability which is need of time as well. So I hope that Pakistani Drama industry will accelerate its effort on all channels specially GEO co it has a capability to attract people rather than other channels which they need to do more in this regard.

Doraha is the first drama that i am watching after many many years. No other drama appealed to me before b/c of its glamor and made up roles. ‘Doraha’ is a comeback for Pakistani dramas for sure. Everything is great from story to cast, acting and direction and not to forget the amazing title track. And i think every normal pakistani person can related to this drama. Keep up the good work and give us more dramas like doraha.

Amazing drama. I am sad that it ended. Sonia Rahman did an awesome job. i love the last episode’s scene where umar and sarah talked first time after their divorce at their friend’s house. i love Sonia Rahman’s acting.
Thank you so much Mehreen for making it.

  108. on 23 Jan 2009 at 1:08 pm farhan

Sonia….. you shud kill azfar…how dare he insulted that women… :)..sonia we all loves you.. mahreen..u r great…. i love all ur productions..

  109. on 23 Jan 2009 at 1:42 pm Hani

I have to say…this is by far the best of u ive seen so far mehreen! The last episode just aired today and I was holding my breath until the last minute…im glad u didnt give it a star plus ending where sara gets back with umar. the script was just too good!!! Shehla did an awesome job btw…shez new i think…but this was by far her most powerful performance. well i guess leave it to u to get that out of all of them ;). doraha os most definitely cream of the crop for this year. Another one of my favorites by you next to faraar and sanam gazida! neway…two thumbs up on this one!

  110. on 23 Jan 2009 at 3:00 pm Jahmad

    BEST DRAMA is Years!!!!!

  111. on 23 Jan 2009 at 4:03 pm Nadia

Last episode was brilliant..exceptionally well made!

I actually noticed a blooper in the last episode. When Sara and Umer are at Zarwa and Bilal’s house for lunch, Sara mentions some book. After that, Bilal passes Umer the food saying: “yeh loh BILAL”.

  112. on 23 Jan 2009 at 4:53 pm Amara

there was another blooper in few episode where they showed sara living in Umer’s house. They had wedding pictures of umer and sara on the wall. In the wedding photo umer is wearing a black sherwani which he wore when he got married to shehla. He was actually wearing a white shirwani when he got married to sarah.
I thought that was funny. but it doesn’t matter, the drama was amazing. i can’t wait for the next one

  113. on 23 Jan 2009 at 5:00 pm admin

Hey Amara and Nadia. Thanks for being such vigilant viewers :) I agree with Nadia’s observation..it was a blooper and i had hoped no one would notice because we didnt have a better take of that shot.. :)
What Amara says though might have some truth to it because we took the pictures before we shot the serial and we thought we would make the black sherwani seem as if it was the valima picture..

Anyhow I have some more bloopers in the last episode..let’s see if anyone guesses.

  114. on 23 Jan 2009 at 8:19 pm Ambreen Siddiqi

hey guys i’ll content miself from this cliched yet true saying,”all great things come to an end”..
and if the end is good its worth the watch…though i wont hesitate in admittingthat ill miss it greatly..i found solace in the serial…its true..it can happen to anyone..and the way it has been executed…thumbs up to the whole team..namely mim you and Sonia Rehman…and yeah great acting in the ‘reuniting’ scene with omar…
as for the bloopers other than the ones which have been mentioned afore, i think the fact that in one scene Sarah say to her mum “office mein xada kaam tha” and in another later scene she says “interview k liye ja rahi hun” and then omar also asks her first day kesa tha..maybe she quit the first job or smth!!

anyway i dint watch it all that critically…once more “thumbs up”

p.s. Sonia seems soo soft spoken and sweet…its inspiring :)

  115. on 23 Jan 2009 at 8:52 pm Doraha Fan

I am from USA and so far I have only seen 3-4 episodes of this show. When I saw the show for the first time, I was totally glued to it. I just saw Humayun Saeed in Nadia Khan show today and got to know that the drama is ending today in Pakistan. I am looking forward to how the story would unfold. Based on what i have seen so far, I would say good work.

I don’t know how many episodes Doraha has but just one suggestion from my side is that plz make dramas with 100 episodes (limited version of soap that stays on TV long enough yet has a definite beginning and an end). I am big hater of most the Indian soaps but I have realized that if a show comes on TV that is for 30 episodes, by the time I get to know about it the show ends. So more episodes should be there so that even if you miss some episodes, you can still enjoy the rest of it. Also, I have observed that the marketing is very poor for most of the Pakistani shows. I mean if you have made a product, you should work even harder to promote it so that the audiences get to know about it. One example is songs of Pakistani singers in Indian movies. They play one song so many times that even if you don’t like it, you can’t miss it. But if Pakistani singers make a video themselves, I dont hear it as much. One channel where I have seen good marketing is Indus vision. They show telefilms over the weekend but they start publicizing it two weeks in advance and they keep showing it’s clips over and over again for those two weeks.

Well enough of my suggestions. Keep up the good work and please promote Pakistani shows in international markets as well. Thanks

  116. on 24 Jan 2009 at 4:26 am Mehreen

Considering the excellence of quality (with respect to every single aspect be that direction, acting, costumes, sets or anything else) that has been maintained in Doraha throughout, the conclusion to this serial poured cold water over my expectations. Maybe I was expecting too much but I strongly felt that the ending was random and rushed. I have read this story before and from the viewpoint of the published version, the end scene was justified as the entire story was narrated from Shehla’s perspective. But as far as the drama version of this story is concerned, the end scene was gratuitous and somewhat out of context.

Other than that, the undoing of the knot of tension and awkwardness between Sara and Umar, as well as Sara’s acquiesce (or should I say her forgiveness) was not given the right magnitude of footage. For a girl who has gone through so much and has such a strong self-respect, it would have been much more gratifying if Umar would have had to try a little harder than he did to win Sara’s trust again. Almost the entire episode lacked conviction as far as the strength of the screenplay was concerned.

I am inquisitive to know if someone else feels the same way I did. Also the reasons behind the haphazard end, had the channel put on some limitations with respect to time slots or something?

Nevertheless this does not mean that Doraha was not a pleasurable experience. It was a meticulously thoughtful and silkily sensitive execution. No amount of words could do justice to the level of fulfillment that I got to encounter after such a long time. My heartiest of thanks to the entire team of Doraha, specially Umera, Mehreen, Humayun, Adnan and OF COURSE Sonia and Sanam ( I have been an ardent fan of Sonia’s since Pehchan..she is what one would call SUBSTANCE…her portrayal of Neena is still etched in my memory…..as far as Sanam is concerned, this was the first time I had seen her and she was immensely mature and classical in her depiction of Shehla’s character). And yes, how can I forget the evergreen Badar Khalil (the woman never fails to surprise me with her versatile flair) and Qazi Wajid (he is like old wine……gets better with every successive instance), Shehla’s and Sara’s parents (I specifically admired the woman who played Shehla’s mom and the man who played Sara’s dad), Tahira Wasti, their friends, Sara’s sister, Shehla’s friend Aaliya, Umar’s sisters. Anyone and everyone was a thorough treat! Although I don’t know the behind-the-scenes people except for Mehreen and Umera but a tantamount round of ovation for them, in fact a more zealous one as their involvement and passion clearly showed in the smooth and impeccable carriage of Doraha. Only if the ending was as idyllic as the entire serial…

  117. on 24 Jan 2009 at 4:54 am azka

starting from directer mehreen jabbar your work was excellent.then i come to producer and the actors there work was very exilirating. i dont have words to praise this serial.it gained so popularity..i think this was the best serial i have ever seen in my life.as a audeince you have satisfeid me.apart from all this, not only me every1 would have love if there was one more episode.the last episode was very precise. we all wanted to see omer and sara together..and omers family welcoming sara again.anyways over all, i am speechless and yeah i am forward to see this kind of serial soon..i know its not possible for u but can we have another serial protagonist roles play by omer, sara and shehla??i wud love too.plz tell me any website from where i can come to know abt ur next serial..

  118. on 24 Jan 2009 at 7:05 am Zara

Firstly I would like to say thank you MiMi for a wonderful Darama. The direction was superb. Storyline was really strong but yes the ending somehow was right but rushed

And then Mehreen has said everything that I would like to say…

Ending was a bit rushed the darama started with Shela’s story and ended with her but Sara’ character was the one which developed on the way along and become the center point and went through way more turning points ….

All the actress and actors preformed with the heart and soul

All good things come to an end. Thank you for the wonderful experience

p.s. Sonia Rehman, Sanam, Adnan Siddiqui and Humayun Saeed awesome acting

p.s.s. All the actors and actress who played moms and dads Awsome work

p.s.s.s. Mi Mi please no 100 episodes we have enough of those

  119. on 24 Jan 2009 at 7:33 am admin

    Hey all,

I know there’s been a lot of debate about the ending. I think unfortunately i might have to agree with most of what Mehreen (not me, MJ) has said. Umera and I were struggling with the end and the episode came to us while we were in the middle of filming so both of us didnt get enough time to really think it through. Also, originally Doraha was written as a 20 eps serial but when I edited it, it turned out to be 14! Both Umera and I had agreed that the end needed to be stretched out to another episode at least but we thought that we already had 20 so had to rush through the last one.

Am not entirely happy with the last episode myself..i like certain parts, but do feel in retrospect that it needed to be developed. Well, one learns every day! But I am so happy that I had such a great script to work with and that had such insightful knowledge of characters.

  120. on 24 Jan 2009 at 7:43 am azka

    dear mj,
will you please try to look into my request??i think everyone will love it :)

  121. on 24 Jan 2009 at 7:52 am azka

i agree with you mehreen that sara should have given more time to again trust umer but at the same time we cant forget that this serial went too fast in everything which a beleive is very good..they did not showed each and everything in detail…
at the same time i beleive that one more episode would have covered everything..as in first half an hour..umer convincing sara and the second half..there happy life and people welcoming sara
anyways end wasnt up to our expectation but at the same time every other moment made me thrilled..

  122. on 24 Jan 2009 at 11:42 am Basmah Riaz

Very nice ending, quite abstract, better to keep a few questions unanswered. I thought it suited the on-going pace. The dialogues were very well-written in this last episode. Great job on the direction AND presentation!

  127. on 25 Jan 2009 at 7:51 am Rizwan Z.

I’m so much in love with this drama that I can’t wait to have its DVD in my video collection. Well there has already been said a lot about Mehreen Jabbar & the actors..I find myself totally speechless here. All I wanna say that this serial reminded me the days of “Tanhaiyaan” & “Dhoop Kinarey” when people at my home would wait whole week to see them. I listen to the song “Payal” - JAL everyday coz it gives me a feeling that Doraha is with me & in my home!
Last episode especially the ending scenes could have been crafted more beautifully…but still I LOVE this serial. Congrats Mehreen that your work has truly paid you with success. All the best for future.
Plz let me know when Doraha DVD is going to release?

I saw this serial on Ham TV today. I don’t remember the name but it stars Sania Saeed, Nadia Jameel, Humayun Saeed, Faisal Rehman etc and its directed by Mehreen Jabbar. Is this a new serial or a rerun?

    A slightly different (male) perspective…

I thought the first half (up to the divorce) was excellent. Fast paced and captivating. After that, however, the ending was predictable but seemed dragged out. And I found the final episode atrocious.

The acting was good overall. I think Shehla had the toughest job and the actress pulled it off very well, playing the classic tragic heroine. I actually felt as much sympathy for her as for Sara. Certainly Omer came across as the selfish villain. He had the emotional intelligence of a mule, and showed ZERO empathy for anyone else, least of all for Shehla. And I lost all respect and sympathy for him when he decided to abandon his child. It was also a stretch to believe (in the last episode) that everybody else would conspire so readily to help him abandon his child.

From Shehla’s perspective, imagine if you have an eight year old daughter and everyone keeps telling her something over and over again for ten years. She will come to believe it in her core and it would be very hard for her to face reality. Shehla is smitten with puppy love, has no other outlets (she stays at home all day), and has no other (male) interactions to give her a balanced perspective.

It was up to Omer, as the more mature of the two and the object of her affections, to explain the facts of life to her gently. Characteristically, however, he shows no interest in anyone else but himself. If that was the intended character, then the actor portrayed him very well.

(Sorry I can’t name any of the actors. I left Pakistan as a kid over 20 years ago and don’t watch Pakistani dramas usually, so I am not familiar with the latest actors.)

YOu have been away from Pakistan for the longest time i guess .. thats a true image of a Pakistani man ( or should i say 80%) when he is under pressure for family and Ego and at the end he realize he was wrong for all the things .. but obviously he will not accept it like omar did and if dose accept his mistakes he will go after what he wants .. without caring about the people (shela and kid in this case )

  135. on 28 Jan 2009 at 10:33 am azka

    @pak_oz

i disagree with you because fine one has to face reality but the thing is shehla broke his first marriage..because of her sara faced so many consequences with azfar..he never wannted shehla to be his wife because she portrayed herself as a typical star plus serial girlz..even if the marraige took place in some circumstances it dznt mean that he will suufer his whole life..he left shehla but at the same time he said that he will take care of his daughter..
this is what i think :)

  136. on 28 Jan 2009 at 5:31 pm jaweria

    wow…wow…and wow
what else can i say about sonia rehman.she proved herself such a class actress in this serial.100 out of 100 but i wont forget the other sweet girl sanam baloch also..she z so innocent n i find looks of nazia hassan n amisha patel in her.
DORAHA was a treat to watch but the last episode was sooooo disappointing.anyways that could be my personal view.ALL the cast even the smaller characters of zarwa worked so well.i loved sonia parents in the serial.Hats off to u guyz for giving us this best drama.looking forward to see another masterpiece from u people.

    @ Pak_Oz
How could you say that Umer had no care for anyone else but himself..? Didn’t he care for Sara when he married to her despite getting all the antagonism of his parents…didn’t he care for his mother when he divorced Sara…didn’t he care for Shehla when he married to her thinking she was an innocent helpless girl…& then again didn’t he stepped up to save Sara from Azfar..??????

If you have been away from Pakistan for a long time that doesn’t change the traditions & culture of your soil. And yes! by reading your comments I could figure out that you actually have failed to understand the characters & their psychology portrayed in this serial. Just imagine your all sympathies are with Shehla…who have been an obsessed psycho vamp..who wanted to force Umer to love her back by hook or by crook! You can’t say Umer had ZERO sympathy for Shehla..he did marry to her & when realizing that she was responsible for whole mess even then he gave her due respect & did not divorce her the way he divorced Sara!! How could you want a man to live his enire life with someone who destroyed his love life & who was NEVER his choice.!!!! Come on you live in US..& you still believe in such compromises..!

  139. on 29 Jan 2009 at 3:46 am Rizwan Z.

    @ Pak_Oz
I’m sorry to quote that you live in US..as you have not mentioned any country in your last post…but you don’t live in Pak..that’s for sure! As there are many people from US posting their comments..so I mixed up you with them.

what do u do and where do u live?u r lucky if u live near Mehreen i mean in NY..

  144. on 30 Jan 2009 at 6:24 am Pak_Oz

Relax, guys. As other have mentioned it is only a drama. I guess I got a bit carried away also. That’s why I avoid ‘chick flicks’ and watch comedy dramas only. In fact the last Pakistani dramas I watched were ‘Sona Chandi’ and ‘Andhera Ujala’. That Karamdad is one funny dude…

  145. on 30 Jan 2009 at 7:17 am Admin

I am happy to see the inspired debate and everyone is entitled to their opinions. One thing though, I don’t think Omar ‘abandons’ his child. He specifically says that he will take care of his child, but I really disagree with people who stay in unhappy and sometimes very unhealthy marriages for the sake of their children because that itself has severe consequences on the mental health and well being of the child and the parents and can be very toxic later in life.

  146. on 30 Jan 2009 at 11:06 am Mohammad Nasir Khan

    Assalamualakum;

hi after a long time we got wonderfull drama.

  151. on 03 Feb 2009 at 5:35 pm Sehry

hey just wana give a heads up to the entire Doraha cast and Mehreen and Umaira!! you all were so awesome! i live in the United States so i just started watching a couple of the episodes and thank god i found it online so i watched them all at once!! yay!! can’t explain how good that was instead of being so impatient for an episode every week!!
I can truly say i loved it and im not so into dramatic dramas so i really liked the down to earth feeling with this one.
I heard a rumour that there is another season for this drama? Can someone clarify that for me please?? If theres a vote for it than i soo call for another season with the old cast just to keep it living!! ^_^
Mehreen your one of the FEW talented people in Pakistan and i really mean that! I also love both of Umer’s wives lol their actings were phenomenol!!!!!
    Keep me updated guys =]
    take care Allah Hafiz

  152. on 05 Feb 2009 at 8:32 am Saba

Hiya..I cudnt wait to wait for new episodes every week so I watched the whole drama in one day on a website.
I absolutely loved it, loved it loved it until the END..and I really don’t understand the end…im not sure whether Sarah’s gonna marry him again or not? if she has any self respect and ego left then she shudnt fall for him all over again, and secondly she shudnt be the cause of breaking a family..
And the way Omar left his wife in the end is just so selfish…once he leaves one wife then another and then wants to get back with the first one…what does he think of himself? shudnt he be caring of his little daughter but not shehla n sara…didnt expect this end at all…
Cast was really good, story(until the end) was fab just like Umaira, and direction was just marvellous. Hats off Mehreen, keep it up!!

Writing these lines from west of Canada, great drama, congrat to Umaira Ahmed and you, great work Man,Sonia was great in her role. She should shed some pounds to look more beautiful. First time I liked Hummiyun’s acting:). Excellent team work.Keep it up.

  156. on 10 Feb 2009 at 12:29 am shazia

i loved doraha but the last episode was not as forceful as it shud have been actually i have read the story and the last speech made by umar in it was very good it had more impact i have read everybody’s comments if umar was a little selfish in the end it is not surprising he was human being after all adn he had suffered much the beauty of the play was no one was larger than life they were ordinary ppl with shades of grey not black or white shehla had no right to break his home even if she loved him from childhood adn i think it was umar’s duty to accept sara again as he had ruined her life and she had given him so much

  157. on 10 Feb 2009 at 5:32 am redkazim

I watched the play because of Sonia Rehman. Felt like kicking Omar’s a** when he divorced her. Good job MJ!

  158. on 12 Feb 2009 at 8:51 pm SONIA

    @Shazia
The moral of the story is that these men r always selfish. they only think abt their selves first..when it comes to woman … they always sacrifices(mostly)but men r not like that..;)

  159. on 13 Feb 2009 at 12:06 pm Shafaq

Doraha is one of the dramas that actually makes you think and realize that this is going on around you. It gives out a lot of messages, like SONIA said that all men are selfish in context that they are always concerned about what they want and how can they get it. Same in this drama, Umar always did what he wanted, he cared about sarah, loved her but he never bothered about what she wanted. Like after divorce, she didn’t wanted to see him but he was so much in guilty persuaded her to meet her and because she always loved him and he knew that their love will refresh again.

I mean it’s a wonderful drama to learn from it. To what extent people go to in jealousy, and like how they feeded Shaila since age 8 that they will get married. It’s still going on in our culture and in a way its wrong. Because nobody knows what’s written in your destiny, we can make decisions but they could be wrong.

Anyways, enough of serious discussion. I think that all the people related to this drama did a wonderful job. No doubt about it. It’s a popular drama in U.S even though we get to see it after it’s ended. But Sonia was awesome in my opinion.

  160. on 14 Feb 2009 at 4:23 pm cherry

mujhe drama achha laga jaisa drame me dekhaya asal zindagi me waisa hi hota hai. lekien umar jaisa mardon ko sabak dene ke liye ex wife shouldnt marry him again i wouldnt trust him again sarah ko umar se dosti rakna hai to is ok but shaadi noway pehle sarah ki zindagi spoiled kia ab shaila aur apni daughter ki zindagi this man is so selfish agar shaila se mohabbat nahi tha to why making love to her why a daughter door rehta shaila se agar tanman me sarah bassi thi to ab umar must take some reponsebility of his wife and child and sarah u will Inshallah find a better and loving husband aur agar nahi to hum womans ko mardon ki need bhi nahi hai. thxx to those who uploaded such a nice drama. and to the actors u people did very nice job thank uuu.

    Take care.

  166. on 18 Feb 2009 at 3:32 pm Sara

Nahhh guys let it go, love should win, Hopefully Umer has learmned his lesson well! I don’t think he was selfish, just ignorant & too caring about his mom & Shela’s future & let’s not forget Shela’s conniving, scheming role in all of this, but yes, ultimately it was Umer’s fault, but they still love each other, so let love conquer all! I know it sounds cheesy, but hey Im a romantic what can I say?

  167. on 19 Feb 2009 at 12:58 am Rifah

    Dear Mehreen,

I havent seen such a beautifully scripted and directed drama in a very long time. I hope you would be coming up with new plays like this one very soon. The cast also performed very well in line with their characters. I have heard that a sequel for this play is being made. Is this true?

    Regards.

  168. on 19 Feb 2009 at 1:51 pm Afsheen

I feel the societal pressures led Umar to the path he didn’t want to take. Sarah and Shaila are two sides of a coin. Umar tossed it both ways. Heads led to love & tragedy, Tails led to sorrow & guilt. Was the balancing act in the end the correct path he should’ve taken in the beginning? But if he had done that, there wouldn’t be a “Doraha”? Umaira and Mehreen, thanks for re-charging our minds!

  169. on 19 Feb 2009 at 2:06 pm Sara DC

Ok it’s official! I’ve gone DC i.e. Doraha Crazy! I will discuss each & every dialogue & each & every scene w/ anyone, anywhere, so much so that I’m even scaring myself! I mean I’ve never participated in any drama/ movie discussions before, since I’m not some teeny bopper, but a grown woman of 2 kids!! I am normally uhh very normal:( But this play has got a hold on me. It seems so real. Sonia Rehman’s acting is soooo natural that she looks just like a girl next door. And enough already w/ her weihght comments plss. Not every1 has to be a skinny teeny bopper size 4. That’s why she touches on so many levels. She still looks beautiful & very graceful.

I love the scene when they show Sanam Baloch singing that Indian song “Aur bhi hazaar hongay, jo kay daawaydaar hongay” while brushing her hair after Sara’s divorce is brilliant.
Another adorable scene is in t/ last ep. where Umer & Sara play Karam board w/ their friends and he gives her a second chance @ t/ board & they both smile @ each other. It was soo simple & soo cute!

Ofcourse, t/ last scene is brilliantly done & played by Umer & Sanam in t/ dark. I did love t/ last ep. tho it was a bit rushed as MJ pointed out for various reasons. Would have loved anothr ep. No I don’t care about HIS parents how they accept her back , who cares?? She should never have to see their faces again, remember how MIL pushed her out of her home right after t/ divorce?? It’s about SARA accepting him & his family , daughter included:(
I will discuss every dialogue & evry scene, anyone got time??

  170. on 19 Feb 2009 at 9:08 pm SONIA

    @Hasham
MR hasham i think the end is not only good but it is brilliently shot.. its very different and not ended like any other stupid dramas..

  171. on 19 Feb 2009 at 9:26 pm SONIA

    @Sara
u r getting me wrong i m saying in general that men doesnt have sacrificing nature as compared to women..

  172. on 21 Feb 2009 at 5:50 am Mehreen

Mehreen, its the first time you are getting this massive of a feedback because this is the first time your fans actually got to interact with you so closely. Bless the blogging trend…..is it possible that we have a separate blog for each of your past serials such as Pehchan, Putli Ghar, Dhoop Mein Sawan, Amma Abba aur Ali, Ab tum jaasaktay ho and all others?

  173. on 22 Feb 2009 at 8:36 am Safa

You know apart from the million reasons i actually liked a drama [ Finally ] the biggest reason was it highlighted the ongoing flaws in our society. Such as “Star Plus” dramas and how much it has affected the thinking of the females of Pak. How much they waste their time on it and what not.
Also the fact that it was all so natural, the cast was amazing and the acting was suberb! Great job by the writer and the cast.

Its been ages i actually came to appreciate a drama, im not a big fan but my cousins came and introduced me to this amazing serial :). And the best part was only 20 episodes :D Good Job! and keep coming up with such scripts.

  174. on 22 Feb 2009 at 1:14 pm Sara DC

awesome drama………..need more like these types. also the title track and “duniya” are wonderful too.

  180. on 01 Mar 2009 at 8:53 am Javeria

I live USA I hardly watch Paki dramas and I’m not even familiar with names of actors/actresses or writers/producers. but Since I saw my bhabi watching this drama one day, I was really impressed with you guys work. I was addicted to this drama. I LOVED this drama. I watched 3-11 episodes on Geo but couldn’t wait for the end. So I searched online and thank God this site existed and had all of the episodes w/o any errors.
Some of the episodes at last were soooo emotional I couldn’t handle it. I cried soooo much for Sara and I was sooo upset at Omar, but the end was such a relief. I read some of the comments about Omar’s daughter but I believe he can take care of her and Sara has such a big heart, I’m sure she won’t mind Omar visiting her daughter. A lot of things are happening all over the world, I’m sure this may be a reality for someone out there if not all of it, maybe partially they can relate themselves to it. I wanted to see sara and omar happy, together and in romance at the end. So I went back and watched some scenes from early episodes. I learned alot from sarah’s patience, braveness, compromising and cooperative skills. Now I can’t wait to show this drama to my husband to learn from omar’s romance, and from his mistake. We have a shella in between us too but thank God our shella isn’t a girl he could marry.but he still needs to slap this shella and kick her out of our relationship. I hope he picks up good things from this drama too.
Wow the acting was excellent!!! I mean EXCELLENT!
I just don’t hope there’s second part of the drama that might show their relationship tipping over again. I just want to see them happy now, especially after what they’ve gone through. Drama felt so real. I’ve never gotton so attached or emotional to the dramas but this story, production, acting was sooooooo good, I couldn’t help but put away my books and watch rest of the episode all at once all night long.

GOOD JOB GUYS!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

  181. on 02 Mar 2009 at 11:40 am Ruba

omg! this serial is so awesome. you guys did an awesome job!!!! i really love the ending. but i think omar should have taken his daughter with him. well but whatever it was such a cute serial =))

AOA…this is the first time i am writting a comment on any drama serial…the reason why i am writting this comment is when i started watching the serial i just saw myself as sarah this is my life story other than the part {humayun divorce} even my husband watch it and we name this drama as our house no in pakistan . this is true and i am lucky my husband didnot make that mistake…
awesome direction … awesome acting and what else i say just every thing was perfect or you can say …”just right”…nice job and keep it up GOD BLESS YOU on showing the reality of life

Doraha is a masterpiece…Mehreen im not sure you will be able to perfect your art any better than you have with this drama. Everything from the cast, story, locations, songs, was perfect..all but the ending…im sure we all agree that we would have liked to see Sarah and Omer get together at the end and Sarah giving Omer one big slap :)

But seriously, u have excelled …hats off to Humayun and Sonia for superb acting…

  187. on 18 Mar 2009 at 9:11 am Rabea Ahmad

Thank you for making such a beautiful play. I am so happy that you showed people in your play who enjoy reading books, a dying habit in our country unfortunately. Also the house you chose for Omer and his family was absolutely beautiful, with its verandas and arches and white washed walls. It reminds us of our heritage and our great architecture, which is being neglected and destroyed and being replaced in todays Pakistan with ‘modern’ monstrosities. I am not sure if the pakistani public even realize that in your plays you are also preserving our heritage, our traditions and our values in a very effective way. Thank you Mehreen for showing us what a beautiful place we can be..

  188. on 21 Mar 2009 at 9:42 pm Nasir Kamal

Fantastic direction, good acting and the script. The dialogue deliver was the topping on the cake.
However the ending is incomplete and confusing. Should have been stronger and defining.

Good addition to the rich history of Pakistani dramas.

    Thanks,
    Nasir

I agree with you Rabea. That is exactly what my conclusion was after Doraha. One of its prime highlights was the way reading was depicted as the ‘cool’ thing to do rather than the ‘geeky’ image it has in the contemporary mindsets, specially amongst the youth. Not just that, but from Doraha I got the strongest feel of it being a PAKISTANI drama. On several instances (I don’t know if it was consciuous or involuntary) I saw glimpses of efforts in the quest of promoting Pakistani culture…..like the way, in the last episode, when Sonya is on the laptop and she asks her father ‘abbu aapnay meri Nayyara Noor ki cd dekhi hai’….then when Sanam Baloch is going through Humayun Saeed’s stuff……there I saw so many Urdu books like Mantonama and Peer-e-Kamil…..it felt beautiful to have that feeling of belongingness and national pride stimulated within the heart, that too from a Pakistani drama after such a long time…….I am watching ‘aur zindagi badalti hai’ these days and even in that serial, I encounter intimate tidbits relevant to our heritage…….like the gift of Nasir Kazmi’s ghazals from Faisal to Nadia or the mention of childhood stories between Sania and Nadia (the traditional ones such as Podna Podni that our grandmothers used to tell us…)it is SO PAKISTANI!..And the best part is, these instances are handled with such panache, that there is not even an iota of awkwardness or something that makes you go ‘what the hell was that’….I have encountered such gauche moments a LOT in dramas these days (Pakistani and Indian)……this is what I’d term ‘flair with substance’

Doraha Drama is a true story of my life. I am married to a guy who is (Omer + Asfer). I am not sure if I am his second wife or third. My marriage is based on million lies and false promises. My In laws are same as Sara’s In Laws (both omer’s and Asfer’s Family). And my family is same as Sara’s family. I thought I am the only one going through this life. An educated girl from a decent family married into a sick, psycho and inhumane family. I had 2 miscarriages. But I am still scared and not that strong to get out of it. My husband is trying to kill my ego and self-respect. I don’t know how it feels like to live a normal life with no physical and verbal abuse. My family is being insulted because my mother in law thinks I have trapped her son. She blackmails me that divorce is a stigma for a girl and her family. On the other hand pressurizes her son to divorce me. She dislikes me because she thinks I am a foreign educated girl who has no idea about Pakistani culture and values. I am killing myself to please and prove that she is wrong about me. My husband thinks that I watch TV because I enjoy watching men on TV. I am not allowed to step out of my room. I can not talk to my family. No one can talk to me. I don’t talk to my friends because I am scared my husband will make my scandal with their husbands. I can go on and on about the things that are similar to my real life in this Drama.
Thank you for such a beautiful Drama Serial.

Hey all. Thanks once again for writing from time to time. The song that was used at the end was Atif Aslam’s ‘Humrahi’.
Regarding the post that is just above me, thank you for sharing your life but I would strongly advise you to get out of this relationship as fast as you can because from you have told me, it is not worth wasting your life and time on. If your family is like Sara’s then they will understand and support you. If not, there are many organizations and support groups. Dont know if you are based in Pakistan or elsewhere, but for your own sake, get out of this.

    All the best to you.

    @ SARA
Sara y u r wasting ur life like this.. life is given only once dont do this with ur self..Mehreen is right leave that ……as soon as possible. Since my school days i hate men becoz i read all those stories abt women raped and being tortured by men..but now since i grew older my thinking has been changed i reralised that 5 fingures r not equal but still i think men r more selfish and insensitive as compared to women..if i were u i will not spend a second in that house i dont know how u r living there. as a woman i m advising u and i can even help u out in this situation if u like ..

  196. on 28 Mar 2009 at 1:06 pm Sara

    Sonia
I left his house in Pakistan and came to USA with my (widow)mom so that he wont harm me.
But i dont know what to do next. My mother has asked him to divorce me. But i know he loves to torture me, wants to see me beg and cry. I am scared. He’s got very strong police connections. Everyone will blame me and no one will belive me. What will i do after divorce. What if i get another bad relationship.

  197. on 29 Mar 2009 at 9:27 pm Sonia

    @Sara

Thats good to hear u left that house and as u said that u r in USA i dont think that he could do anything .USA is not pakistan where he could try to harm u ..Be brave dont act like a pakistani women..Life is not only abt to get married and sit idle at home there r many more things in life to do.. and dont think if one relationship doesnt work the other one will also not work..i think u have gone through lot of bad things in life thats y ur thinking is negative.remember people r not so important in our lives dont afraid of what they think abt u or they belive u or not just belive in ur self.go out with friends and have fun ..and be BRAVE

How can i get this Drama serial on DVD? Watching this Drama was like watching my life in a mirror. That was my moment of realization that i cant live like this. If i want Sara in Drama to get out of that ugly realtionship than why not me. Thank you Admin and Thank you Sonia. I need lots of counceling and support at this time. I feel my brain has stopped working. And i am the dummest human being on plant earth.
Regarding my real life Drama the reply i got back from my husband is. “Islam has allowed me to keep 4 wives at a time. I am marrying again. and i will not divorce you. I will teach you a lesson”.
I am in States for short time. Recovering from his mental and physical tortures so that when i go back i can deal with him bravely and strongly.

Me and my husband watched this drama on you tube and gotta say that after a very long time enjoyed a Pakistani drama. For two days we were stuck with the computer. Lately the dramas that are shown on different channels are some how a copy of Indian dramas, same stories, same dressing and same characters. I remember when we use to hear that Indians loved our dramas since their dramas weren’t as good as ours because they has stories to them and definitely had quality work written all over them… then why did we started to make our dramas like theirs??
I just want to commend to all of “Doraha’s team”for bringing great entertainment back into our lives. It was a great time effort. Keep up the good work….We simply loved the drama and all the actors performed very well especially Badar Khalil, Humayun Saeed and Sonia Rehman. Great Production, Direction and Acting….Hope that we’ll see more quality dramas like this in the future….Loved it!!!!

Doraha was amazing. I loved every single episode and sad to say, today i saw the last episode. I know its been on for 14 weeks, but since i watched episodes 1-10 online in about 3 days i feel like the drama ended too soon! However, i think the actors did a superb job in everything, the drama was expertly directed and i know this drama was one of my favorites. love it love it love it

Mehreen you really are a breath of fresh air. Your direction is subtle, vivid and classy. Sonia Rehman is a natural. The drama ends on a happy note which is great as all news coming from Pakistan is so depressing. I saw the whole series, after we had recorded, it in one sitting.I am usually skeptical but your drama had a distinctly sweet flavor to it. Havent been to Pakistan in a while but miss its messy traffic, cultural variety and the warm people with intricacies too complicated to describe to an outsider. You captured the complexities of marriage, if it goes array, perfectly.I will be looking out for more from you.
    Best.
